Silver Together: A Father & Son Tournament Story

"The medal is cool. The memories are better."

A few months ago, I picked up a pickleball paddle looking for a new hobby.

What I found was something much bigger.

This past weekend, my dad Paul and I stood on the podium together after earning Silver in Men's Doubles 3.0 at the Huntington Beach Slam Cash Prize Tournament.

The medal is cool.

The memories are better.

More Than a Tournament

One of the unexpected gifts of pickleball has been the opportunity to spend more time with my dad.

As adults, life gets busy.

Work, family, responsibilities, and schedules have a way of pulling people in different directions. Pickleball gave us something that belongs entirely to us.

  • Early morning sessions
  • Strategy discussions
  • Tournament road trips
  • Wins
  • Losses
  • Countless hours on the court

When we signed up for this tournament, the goal wasn't to win a medal.

The goal was simple:

Compete. Learn. Have fun.

The medal was a bonus.

Tournament Day

Tournament mornings are always a mix of excitement and nerves.

You spend weeks preparing, drilling, and thinking about matchups. Then suddenly you're standing courtside waiting for the first serve.

We had moments where we played some of our best pickleball.

We also had moments that reminded us exactly why we're still students of the game.

That's competition.

That's growth.

That's why we love it.

Lessons From The Podium

Every tournament teaches you something.

This one reinforced a few lessons we'll carry into the next event.

Preparation Matters

The work you put in before tournament day shows up when the pressure arrives.

You can't fake preparation. You can only trust it.

Adrenaline Is Real

The first few games always feel faster than they actually are.

Learning how to settle in quickly is a skill all by itself.

Communication Wins Matches

Doubles is a partnership.

The better we communicate, the better we play.

Simple as that.

The Process Is The Reward

The medal will eventually end up on a shelf.

The improvement stays with you.

Why We Started BKR Pickleball

This tournament perfectly captures why we're building BKR.

BKR Pickleball isn't about pretending to be professional athletes. It's not about chasing social media attention.

It's about documenting the journey.

The tournaments. The training. The lessons. The wins. The losses. The moments in between.

Most importantly, it's about the relationships that make the game meaningful.

Our story happens to be a father and son. But one of the things that makes pickleball special is that everyone has their own version of this story.

Friends. Families. Parents and kids. Grandparents and grandchildren.

The game has a way of bringing people together.

No Free Points

One phrase has become a cornerstone of our brand:

NO FREE POINTS

To us, it isn't about taking the game too seriously.

It's about effort. It's about preparation. It's about respecting your opponents enough to bring your best.

Every point earned. Every lesson earned. Every improvement earned.

Looking Ahead

This silver medal is something we'll always remember.

Not because of where we finished. But because of who we shared it with.

We'll keep competing. We'll keep learning. We'll keep documenting the journey.

And we'll keep building BKR Pickleball one point at a time.

Because the best part isn't the podium.

It's getting there together.
